Nebraska should be the representative for the North in the Big 12 title game. I almost bought my ticket this past weekend after the win over Oklahoma, but I'll wait to see if they beat Kansas (coupled with a KState loss).
That was one of the most exciting games in spite of the low score that I have sat through in Memorial Stadium. Actually we didn't sit the entire game for the first time since I can't remember, but it was probably another Oklahoma game. The intensity of the crowd was something I haven't seen since the USC game in 2007 but that only lasted for part of the first quarter. It was a classic game in a storied rivalry that brings back a lot of memories for Husker and Sooner fans. I kept waiting for "Sooner magic" to rear it's ugly head again but it didn't happen.
When they introduced the NU and OU legends at half time the ovation given to Barry Switzer brought back one of my favorite Sooner memories which was the night before the Keith Jackson catch Sooner magic game. We were at our usual hangout of Misty's on Havelock and Barry had rented one of the upstairs rooms. Word got around the restaurant that Barry was there and soon there was a chant going around "Baaaarry, Baaarrry." He heard it and came to the top of the stairs and the whole restaurant went nuts. Shortly after that I was in the rest room standing at one of the two urinals and Barry came to the second one. A drunk Husker fan tapped him on the shoulder and asked him for his autograph. He answered, "I'm kind of busy right now." After he finished his business he went to sign the autograph and the poor drunk Husker fan didn't have a pen. He never got his autograph and Barry apologized to him because he couldn't give him an autograph.
This Oklahoma game week was special in the fact that Johnny Rodgers put together a Nebraska tour of former Sooner and Husker Heisman winners with stops in Hastings, Lincoln and Omaha over a three day period. It was a real pleasure to meet for the first time and spend some time with Steve Owens, Billy Sims, and Jason White as well as seeing again the Nebraska trio of Rodgers, Rozier, and Crouch. I am sure Billy gets tired of being asked about the "fumble" but they all seemed to enjoy mingling with Husker fans across the state.
I noticed that there was another article from an out of town writer about Husker hospitality. We had the ABC affiliate from Tulsa stop by and visit our tailgate courtesy of Don Nelson from the Oklahoma Husker Alumni Chapter. Sooner 24 from the bulletin board also took the time to stop by. Next time I will remember to invite the members from his Oklahoma board that were so gracious to me on my first trip to Norman five years ago. It's really unfortunate that my next opportunity to go to a game in Norman won't be for three more years.
I witnessed several comments from Sooner fans about how the NU-OU rivalry is their real rivalry and the Red River shootout is secondary. I agree with their assessment and it should go beyond talking about it and making it an annual event again. There has been a lot of debate and reasons given why it will never happen. When you listen to the reasoning it always revolves around finances, strength of schedule, etc., etc. If they really wanted to, two people could make it happen - Tom Osborne and Joe Castiglione. There is an expression in football that goes like this - "It's not about X's and O's. It about the Jimmys and Joes." It's time for Tom and Joe to return the Nebraska-Oklahoma game to an annual game by scheduling each other as non-conference opponents in the odd years that they are not currently scheduled. With few exceptions these games have been classic battles that had conference and national championship implications. That has pretty much not been the case since the inception of the Big 12. Husker and Sooner fans want it back and it is time that the decision makers start listening and replace Sun Belt conference opponents with annual NU-OU games. We are the ones buying the tickets and we should insist on restoring the annual classic rivalry that is Nebraska vs. Oklahoma.
"Back in 1775, my Marine Corps came alive..." Yes, 234 Years and still going. I've been a civilian since 2000, but I still remember the cadences, the PT (physical training), the history, and every year I still celebrate my other birthday. The Marine Corps birthday. From what was started back in Philadelphia, PA at Tun Tavern is what we know today as the United States Marine Corps. Every year, Marines celebrate where ever they may be stationed, with a birthday message and ceremony of the cutting of the cake for the youngest and oldest Marine. I still have my dress blues too, they're hanging in my closet. The rest of my uniforms are in my sea bag under my staircase, no way can or will I part with them.
- We are United States Marines, and for two and a quarter centuries we have defined the standards of courage, esprit, and military prowess. [Gen. James L. Jones, USMC (CMC); 10 November 2000]
- I love the Corps for those intangible possessions that cannot be issued: pride, honor, integrity, and being able to carry on the traditions for generations of warriors past. [Cpl. Jeff Sornig, USMC; in Navy Times, November 1994]
I remember the day I enlisted, the nervousness as I left home to the airport, boarding the plane for San Diego and arriving at the MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot). It wasn't until I stood on those yellow footsteps that I was no longer an individual, but about to be apart of something bigger and become apart of the history and carry it with me. I still remember "reveille", the shock of getting out of bed by the Drill Instructors (all before the sun was out), learning about discipline (the hard way), it was tradition. From sunrise until sunset we were training (drill, lecture, PT, drill, lecture, PT, ect...), and yes some IT was thrown in there as well. It was about breaking down the "individual" and rebuilding from there to be apart of a team, a unit, the Corps.
I miss it at times, but it's apart of me, I'm thankful I took that journey. I'm proud to have served in the Corps, so many memories from my time enlisted. I always stand "taller" or sit "higher" in my seat (while driving) anytime I see the Marine Corps flag posted or carried about.
Happy Birthday Marines...
